The great British summer is here and that means one thing; BBQs. It doesn’t take much to throw a bash to remember, but it does require a certain amount of planning and preparation. But don’t panic, thankfully we’ve thought of everything you’ll need, and just head to your local supermarket for it all such as ASDA Barons Quay!

  1. The weather

First and foremost, you need good weather on your side. Unless you’re going at it in true British style and stubbornly BBQ’ing in the rain. Of course, you can’t always count on the weather going your way in this country, but you can still plan ahead and be prepared. Check multiple apps and reliable sources online in the days leading up to your big day.

We’d also advise having a marquee or gazebo on standby just in case the heavens do decide to open unexpectedly.

  1. The equipment

Secondly, you need to think about exactly how you’re going to cook your food. Take a stroll down the aisles of any garden centre, and you’ll notice there are dozens of different kinds of BBQs, but which one do you go for? There are pros and cons to each one, but some important things to consider are how easy it will be to use, how many people you’re cooking for, and preferred flavours.

Gas BBQs are generally considered to be easier to light, use and clean. But on the other hand, charcoal BBQs are less expensive and can enrich your food with unique and smoky flavours that your guests will love. The downside of a charcoal BBQ is that it can up to 40 minutes to reach the optimum cooking temperature, while gas is pretty much instant.

  1. The utensils

The perfect barbequer is only as good as the tools they wield. When you’re out shopping, look for tools that have long handles as these will keep your hands and fingers away from the heat – the last thing you want are burns. The utensils you’ll most likely need are a spatula, tongs, and a fork. Also good ones to have are knives, a marinade brush, chopping boards and an apron. It’s up to you whether you buy one that’s amusing or personalised.

  1. Garden furniture

If the weather is truly glorious, then you’ll want to enjoy your food outdoors too, so make sure you have ways of keeping your guests comfortable. Nobody likes to stand and eat. Standard chairs and tables will do even if they’re mismatched because you had to borrow from the neighbours. Spread out a couple of bright picnic blankets for the kids or even adults who don’t mind perching cross-legged.

And don’t forget to accessorise. A few decorations, tablecloths, parasols and vases of flowers can really help to bring the scene to life. Finally, the music. Link up to a popular playlist online that’ll cater to most people’s tastes and just leave it running all evening. That’s your entertainment sorted.

  1. The food

Now onto the important stuff. No BBQ is complete without the food, so make sure your shopping list encompasses absolutely everything you may possibly need. Here’s what we’ll think you’ll want…

  • Burgers – both meat and veggie
  • Sausages – as above!
  • Halloumi
  • Cheese slices
  • Chicken wings and thighs
  • Hot dogs
  • Corn on the cob
  • Jacket potatoes
  • Peppers
  • Ribs
  • Salad
  • Coleslaw
  • Wine
  • Beer
  • Fizzy drinks
  • Paper cups and plates
  • Plastic knives and forks

It’s always best to overestimate with your food. It’s better to be eating delicious leftovers for days than having guests go hungry!

And now you’re all set; all you need is the company!
