NEWS

Any given year, you can look forward to one or two huge blockbusters arriving on a screen near you. But 2018 is different, as there’s a whole boatload of them coming throughout the entire 12 months. In fact, let’s just say that the entire year is summer blockbuster season. So whether you consider yourself a film buff or are just looking for something to do on a Friday night, here are eight of the best cinema blockbusters that you need to feast your eyes on before the year ends.

1. Ocean’s 8

It’s been more than 10 years since the Ocean’s family graced our screens to impress and shock us with another grand heist, and in 2018 Debbie Ocean appeared to replace her brother. Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter. With such a star-studded cast, need we say any more?

2. Avenger’s Infinity War

Everyone knows that superheroes are the ‘thing’ of the moment. They have been for years now and it’s a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. So if this train isn’t stopping, surely the next port of call is to cram 35 different superheroes onto one silver screen at the same time? We’re on board.

3. Black Panther

This movie has been hailed by critics and audiences alike for its incredible progressiveness and also for being downright fantastic. Set just before Avenger’s Infinity War, you’re in for one heck of a thrilling ride when you sit down to watch Black Panther.

4. Solo: A Star Wars Story

So while it may not be Harrison Ford gracing our screens, we finally get the Han Solo backstory that we’ve always wanted. And plenty of Chewbacca, of course. The spin-off has had a little trouble getting off the ground in terms of production, but nevertheless it’s made its great debut and we finally get to see our favourite space smuggler once again.

5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The iconic music of Jurassic Park leaves everyone filled with an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia; and who doesn’t love the franchise? Chris Pratt brings the infamous park back to life as he and Bryce Dallas Howard head to the trashed and abandoned island to save as many species as they can before a volcanic eruption wipes them all out. Again.

6. The Incredibles 2

Remember the first time our favourite superhero family zoomed onto our screens? We bet that every “grown-up” in their late 20s and early 30s will be queueing outside of the cinema to see this one. Mr Incredible is adjusting to life as a stay-at-home dad in this much-loved sequel to the 2004 original.

7. Mission: Impossible – Fallout

As you’d expect with any mystery, thriller or heist, the plot details for the latest Mission: Impossible film have been kept tightly under wraps. It’s only natural, of course because what spy movie doesn’t have top secrets under lock and key? You’ll have to see this one for yourselves to find out what happens – no spoilers here. But one thing we do know is that Henry Cavill sports a fantastic moustache.

8. Crazy Rich Asians

A brand new release in the cinema, Crazy Rich Asians has been getting some serious press and social media attention since its debut. It takes a peek behind the curtain into the lives of one of Singapore’s (fictional) wealthiest families. While the story itself may be fiction, the portrayal of wealth may not be.
